Stormy Night

2001 Juried Exhibition, International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA), Kansas City, MO

The purpose of this project was to explore surface design techniques by using beads and modification of fabric.
This project was inspired by the night sky in stormy weather. The idea came from catching impressions of stormy element when the lightening strikes the darkness of the night. When the darkness of the night sky was suddenly revealed by the moment of lightening, pouring rain drops and clustered clouds provided overwhelming impression. Therefore those, short, yet, strong impression of the rainfall and clouds were selected as motifs of surface design.

Techniques: Beading, Ruching, Boning foundation

To accomplish the falling impression of rain drops, number of black beads were gradually decreased from the top of the strand and clear-silver beads were increased. The clouds were created with manipulation of silver-gray fabric by random ruching onto the backing fabric. The depth of the irregular folds produced tones of light and shade within the fabric to portrait the movement of the rain clouds.
